Third grade????

Katherine came home from school today with the news that a little boy in her class is skipping second grade and moving right into third grade. Now.... this little boy is brilliant. He's doing math at a 5th grade or higher level and reads around the same level. He spends most of his days in "special" classes because he's totally bored in regular first grade classes.

When Katherine found this out, it completely stressed her out. I mean COMPLETELY. STRESSED. HER. OUT. After all, why wasn't she getting moved up? She was smart. She was good in math and reading...... I explained (as vaguely as possible knowing it could be repeated in school) that skipping a grade wasn't necessarily a good thing. She wasn't satisfied with my answer, and went into the scrapbook room where her wipe board and school/craft supplies are and went to work. After about 45 minutes of doing math, she came out, ready to prove to me that she too, should be moved right up to third grade. AAAAAHHHHHH, I mean really, could she be any more competitive? LOL!

Once again, I explained to her that I wouldn't want her to skip second grade. She'd have to make all new friends. Her peers would be all older than her. She'd have to leave for college a year earlier. I tried to reason with her, I really did....

Finally, out of sheer frustration, she looks at me, totally exasperated and says, "I'm totally ready to move up to third grade. I EVEN KNOW WHAT 90 DIVIDED BY 2 IS. 45"!!! LOL!!

Man, I love that kid. Love her determination. Love her self confidence. Love her competitive spirit. With that attitude she'll go far. I just need to make sure she's pointed in the right direction!
