Katherine doesn't have the flu. She's not contagious. Unfortunately what she has is worse. How much worse, we're not sure yet, but at least we have answers and my little girl is on the road to recovery.
We saw Dr. Jon today at 1, and he instantly knew she didn't have the flu. He did mention that he's seen several people with the flu that lasted the better part of 2 weeks, but this definitely wasn't it.... Instant relief and sickening worry set in at the same time.
As he kept asking questions, he thought she could either have an (i) ulcer, or (ii) intestinal blockage. He listened and felt her tummy over really well, and then said he was pretty sure she had an intestinal blockage. He could feel poop stuck in her intestines and said that it had to be painful for her. She, of course, said she was fine and in no pain.
We went down for x-rays and it confirmed that a blockage existed. Tomorrow we're off to the hospital at 8 am for additional testing. She's getting an upper GI test where she drinks barium (sp???) and then additional x-rays are done so that they can determine if it's an intestinal blockage or some kind of twist in her actual intestines.
So right now, she's on heavy doses of laxatives and high fiber fruit. We're praying that she's just full of poop and can pass it on her own, but I'll guess we'll know tomorrow. If she has a twisted intestine it'll mean surgery. Oh. my. heavens. She's almost 5 years old. She doesn't deserve this....
Either way, Jon explained it like this.... Because of the blockage, no food can pass through her intestines, and so she pukes it all up instead. One way or another, it has to come out, and in the process she's not getting the nutrients that her body needs. Unfortunately, this will continue happening until we get her pipes cleaned out. I guess this explains the violent puking one minute and a child who is the picture of health the next.
Her weight is a little concerning though... When she was at the doctor 2 weeks ago for an ear infection she weighed 35 pounds with her coat and shoes... Today she was 32.5 (with coat and the same shoes). So, she's losing weight in the process too, and she doesn't have much more to lose.....
So keep my baby in your thoughts and prayers tomorrow. It won't be a fun morning for her....

Happy Leap Day!
This morning came WAY too soon for me! Katherine was up puking for almost 3 hours last night, so when Caleb woke up at the crack of dawn, I was a total zombie!
We're off to the doctor today at 1 to find out what in the world is wrong with my little girl. I certainly hope we get some much needed answers.... To see Katherine today, you wouldn't know anything was wrong last night. She's eating, drinking, playing -- the works. The events last night seem like a distant memory. That's what's so frustrating! She's horribly sick one minute, and fine the next.... Which is why I highly doubt this is the flu. That's what scares me the most.... if it's not the flu, what on earth could it be??

HELP!!
As a parent I'm at a loss.... total and complete loss. I have NO idea what to do with my baby girl, and it scares the life out of me....
Since Matt was working late tonight, Katherine, Caleb and I went out to dinner with my parents, sister and Morgan. Both Katherine and Caleb ate a great lunch, and since it was super early, I didn't think twice about the fact that neither one of the kids ate much. Heck, I didn't even eat that much....
When we got back to my parent's house, Katherine and Caleb were running around and playing with Morgan. Literally, they were running. Oh, and Katherine was playing gymnastics instructor to Morgan. Matt stopped by on his way home, and we ended up leaving around 8:30.
We got home, put the kiddos in their jammies, and gave them a snack. Katherine wouldn't eat. HHHMMMMMMM.......
Fast forward to 2:45 am. I am jolted awake by Katherine screaming at the top of her lungs and running for the bathroom. She puked everywhere. Literally it was everywhere. I had to give her a bath and it took Matt the better part of 45 minutes to clean it up.
What on earth is going on? She's throwing up every other day or so, and sick for the entire next day.... Both Matt and I are praying it's the flu, but it just doesn't seem to fit.... So after a panicked call to my mom (she's good at 3 am LOL) to see what she thinks, I think that I'm taking her to Dr. Jon tomorrow. If it were the flu, wouldn't Caleb have gotten it? After all, they've been known to share a glass at times.... And it's not food poisoning or anything crazy like that. I'm soooo worried about her. This has been going on for far too long.

We're alive!
First and foremost... Thanks to so many of you for your sweet emails and phone calls. I am alive -- barely (LOL) but still here. It's been a really rough last two weeks -- health wise, and hopefully after today we are on the mend.
In a nutshell -- last Friday (as in the day after Valentine's Day) Matt came down with the flu. He started feeling better Saturday afternoon, so we went out to dinner with several sets (5 or 6) of our neighbors. We had a great time, but later that night it became apparently clear that Matt had not recovered. He was sick until Wednesday -- that's right -- almost an entire week of the flu!
Then on Thursday, Caleb woke up from his nap with puke all over his room. All over his bed, all over the floor, all over everything. YUCK!
Saturday night/Sunday morning, Katherine woke up screaming. As you guessed, she also had the flu and threw up all over. It only lasted for a day or so, and I really thought she was on the mend. I sent her to school on Monday and then Monday night her and I were both throwing up. We spent all day today on the couch, and thankfully my mom came over and helped out with Caleb. My goodness! I'm not sure how much more of this I can take! Literally, I'm so sick and tired of being sick and tired that I'm ready to scream.
For me last week was horrible... Without boring you to death with all the details, I was so sick that I didn't even open the laptop -- no checking emails, no blogging (obviously), and no surfing at all.... I spent so much time in bed, that I was seriously concerned that I'd get bedsores! Unfortunately, it's NOT funny!
One thing that I have to share about my little man. My dad has been coming over on Saturday mornings to play with the kids and hang out. I was still in my jammies, sitting at the table and trying not to puke. (Shocking I know....). Caleb comes up to me and asks to sit on my lap. This in itself is shocking, because when his beloved pop-pops is around, no one else exists in his world. Literally. He's such a pop-pop's boy it's crazy! Anyway, he comes up to me, sits on my lap, puts his little hands on my cheeks, and says "I yyyyooove you Mommy" no less that 20 times. Then he starts asking for kisses. Talk about melting my heart! Man, that kid definitely does. He's got me sooo wrapped around his little finger! Later that day, I was on the couch praying I'd start feeling better and he comes up to me, and says "Mommy, you so purrty". Love him! I swear, he's got my number! LOL.
One other small rant that instantly comes to mind.... This winter has been horrible! We've had more snow and ice that I care to think about, and spring can't come soon enough. Anyway, on Monday, it was predicted that we'd get an ice storm followed by about 4 more inches of the white stuff. YUCK! Since it was raining that morning, I really wanted to drop Katherine off at the door at preschool, but in true Katherine fashion, she wouldn't hear of it. So we all pile out of the car in the pouring rain and start walking across the parking lot. Katherine is in front of me, and I'm loaded down -- umbrella and all of her random school stuff in one arm, and Caleb in the other. As we approached the drive up lane, a car motioned us in front of them. All of a sudden, we hit a patch of black ice and all three of us went down -- hard. I took a HUGE gash out of my knee which I'll be shocked if it doesn't scar, and Katherine fell face first into the curb and ended up with a bloody chin. We were all crying! Thankfully, one of the teachers came and picked her up, another one took Caleb and there I sat, in the pouring ran, with a bloody knee and two crying kids. The good news is this... Caleb wasn't hurt at all. His hands "tingled a bit" but other than that, he was fine. I cushioned his fall. He was, however, VERY CONCERNED that the car would run us over! Oh, the things they think of!
Why am I bringing this up??? I know that as a parent, I baby my kids more than some (actually most wouldn't be a stretch). If they get hurt, I'm the first to make sure they're OK. I coddle them. After all, they're my babies and they only stay little for a short time, and I honestly cherish every moment with them. OK -- maybe not the puking moments, but that's what their dad is for! LOL.
Anyway, I have so many friends that when their kids fall down and skin their knee, they instantly tell them that they're fine and to get up and shrug it off. One question... do you NOT remember how much it hurts to skin your knee???? I was in pain all day! I swear it burned for hours and I couldn't bend it until later that night. So... when one of my babies falls and skins their knee, I will be the first to run over and scoop them up and make sure they're OK. I won't tell them to shrug it off and pretend it didn't happen. I understand the pain. Man... I certainly felt it yesterday! So go ahead and laugh at me all you want. A skinned knee hurts WAY more than it looks! UUUUUGH!
Here's to a better tomorrow!

Happy Valentine's Day!
First and foremost -- HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY. I hope your day is filled with hugs and kisses, and that you are in the company of good friends and loved ones. I hope your day is overflowing with laughter and love. I hope that today, more than ever, you are reminded of all the good things that makes up your life.
With that out of the way (LOL)....
OK -- I really don't intend to give a weekly gymnastics update, but I just had to share ....
Katherine is in a class called Kinderbunnies and it's the last class for "little kids" until they graduate into the big gym. Typically, the kids are kept in this class until they are 6 or 6.5.
After class today, I'm getting the kids dressed and ready to head to the car, when Mr. Terry came up and started talking to me. It was perfect timing because I wanted to talk to him anyway. Katherine really wants gymnastics mats for her birthday, and I wanted to ask him which ones I should invest in. We head over to the "customer service" counter where you can pay bills etc... and he hauls out this book and we start to look at it. The receptionist comes over and she says, "Terry, is this your 'Superbunny'?". He started laughing, and said, "yep, this her in the flesh". Katherine looked at me with the most amazing twinkle in her eye and grin on her lips. She was glowing -- and proud.
We started talking about mats and he asked Katherine if she'd like to go into the big gym and try out a few. No brainer there! LOL. So while he and I are discussing which mats I should buy and in what sizes, Katherine hops up on the high beam. He looks at her and says....
Terry: Hey, Sister, get down. You're on the wrong side.
Me: (Thinking -- that I didn't realize that there was a 'wrong side' of the balance beam, but whatever...) Yea, get down sweetie. You shouldn't be up there with your shoes on.
Terry: That's not what I was talking about. She doesn't belong on this side of the gym at all.
Me: (OK, how do you think I'm going to take a comment like that? It really surprised me... He brought us in there and then told Katherine she didn't belong there? What's up with that????). Oh, I'm sorry...
Terry: (Walking over to Katherine....) I don't think your mom understands what you and I already know.... See that bright red mat over there Katherine? That's where you belong. That's the competitive side of the gym. The balance beam that you're standing on is on the recreational side and you don't belong on this side of the gym at all. You have way too much potential. This is the side of the gym for kids who physically won't be able to, or don't have the drive to compete. You have it all, and I don't ever want you to get used to being on this side of the gym, because you don't belong here.
Talk about making her day! Every Thursday morning, she walks past the big windows to the "big girl" gym and looks in, wanting more than anything to be able to go in there. I think after today, she believes that someday she may truly belong in there, and it's that hope that motivates her more than anything.

The search is on.... I either need to find a suitable pee guard for Caleb's potty chair, or I'll be investing in a new potty chair all together. Why didn't anyone tell me that I'd need the thing eventually?!?!?!?!? HECK ... at the time I didn't even know what it was for. So great, not only am I completely ignorant, but on top of that, I have Matt making cute comments like, "Why didn't you ask me what it was? I would have have told you to keep it *SNICKER* *GRIN*". Great, thanks honey! Too late now! So, if anyone knows where I can find one of these little gems, PLEASE let me know!
I had my MAT meeting for Katherine's preschool tonight, and when I got home, I was greeted by two jumping kids excited to see me and ready to plant slobbery kisses all over my face and throw their heavy arms around my neck. What could be better??? In my world, nothing!
After I got settled in, Caleb and I headed for the bathroom, and spent... ooooooh, probably 45 minutes on the potty chair. He had been dry for over 3 hours at this point.... NO success, but we had a great chat, read some good books (one of which Caleb now has memorized), and played cars. Finally, I talked him into getting dressed and heading to bed. He reluctantly agreed, but when he realized he wouldn't be getting a sucker, he broke down and DEMANDED to give it another try. So back on he went...
I had tried almost everything else up to this point, so I got a bowl and brought it over to the sink. I was planning to fill it up with warm water and let him dip his hands in it to relax. While I was running the water, he instantly started to go! Woo-Hoo!!! So he went to bed one happy little boy -- and that makes me one happy Mommy!!
Tomorrow is Katherine's big Valentine's Day party at preschool. I'm going to help out, and both of us are really looking forward to it. They are baking sugar cookies (should be pretty interesting with 18 4/5 year olds! LOL), exchanging Valentines, playing games and eating yummy snacks..... They are also learning about the mail system, so her teacher printed out labels with each child's name and shape/color. (At the beginning of the year, each child was assigned a shape and color and everything they use -- from their cubbies to their crayons -- are labeled with it). They then have to sort their valentines and put them in the appropriate "mail box". The kids love it!
Anyway, Caleb also has Kindermusik tomorrow morning, which means ONE thing..... Matt will be going! Oh, if only I could be a fly on the wall. How I wish I could see Matt getting up and down off the floor like a yo-yo, playing instruments, dancing, and singing. It'll be quite the experience for him! I can't wait to hear how it goes! Thankfully, Caleb talks EXTREMELY well for his age, and doesn't forget a thing, so I'm sure I'll get a full report! Can't wait! LOL.

Potty training begins!
I've had Caleb's little potty chair in my bathroom for weeks now. Literally, it's probably been there for a couple months now, but he's had NO interest in sitting on the thing... So I didn't push it, but just brought it in casual conversation...
Anyway, Saturday morning Matt was going to change his pants, and he told to Matt that "you wait one minute. I'm not done going poopy". He then stood by his changing table, and finished the job, and climbed up himself to get changed. Pretty ridiculous! He's clearly ready to start potty training.
So Saturday night, we sat him on the potty chair, and he was actually excited about it! YAY! We read a few books, played with a yellow Hummer truck, and I finally decided to turn on the water in my whirl pool. All of a sudden, he stood up and started peeing on the floor and all over me. I've never been so happy to be pee'd on in my life! LOL. He sat down and finished, and we all cheered and clapped and had a parade in the house! Good times! Oh, and he did get a little sucker...
Today, he was all about the potty chair. After church, we had lunch and then he raced upstairs. We read books, played with some cars, talked about going potty, turned on the water.... all to no avail. He sat there for an entire hour, with NO success. I felt so badly for him. He even resorted to hollering for the pee to come out! He wanted another sucker in the worst way! LOL.
Right before bed, we sat him back on there, and after 30 minutes he finally went again. Woo-Hoo for my little man! I'm so happy for him. Me... not so much. Once again, he pee'd all over me -- my socks and pants were drenched before he landed back on the potty chair, but that's fine! The poor kid actually sits there for a good half hour before wanting to get up, and then when he finally does, the magic happens. I guess I'll need to learn to get out of his way!
He's soooo ready to get his big boy undies! All he can talk about is getting Thomas the Train and Cars undies! I haven't even bought pull-ups for him yet, but may just go straight for undies this coming weekend!
**** On a side note, this was originally Katherine's potty chair. It came with a white plastic part that went between her legs. I thought it was the silliest thing in the world, and something I definitely didn't need, so I threw it in the garbage. Then I had boy and realized what it was REALLY for. LOL!

I thought it was the silliest thing in the world, and something I definitely didn't need, so I threw it in the garbage. Then I had boy and realized what it was REALLY for. LOL!

Update....
Wow... it's been a week. We had a computer mishap, so I've been disconnected to the internet for almost a week now, and man.... it's been strange. No blogging, no emailing, no surfing my fave web pages, no editing pics, no computer usage at all. I think we finally have the problem fixed, and here's to hoping it doesn't happen again!
So here's a quick update on the happenings in our life --
1. When my nephew, Gus, was born, I suggested that Caleb give him his plug as a baby gift. After all, pacifiers are for babies, and Gus would be the perfect recipient. WRONG ANSWER! All this accomplished was making Caleb realize he wanted NOTHING to with Gus. Yea, nothing. He made it clear that he "didn't yikkke (like) Gus, didn't yikkke babies, didn't want to go to the hospital and didn't want to share his plug". Great! I really messed that one up!
Well..... fast forward to Monday. After preschool, we invited Nicholas and Caden over for lunch and to play for a while. Katherine is in LOOOOVE with their baby sister, McKenna, who was born on December 10th. She's this adorable little bundle of pink, and Katherine is smitten. After Katherine was done holding her, Caleb asked if he could hold her. I was shocked! Michelle put McKenna on his lap and he sat as still as could be with the biggest smile on his face. He kept saying, "I LOOVE her" and patting her little cheek as gently as he could. Then, when Michelle picked her up, he asked if he could kiss her, and wanted to make sure he planted one right on her lips. Oh, and after that, he kissed her a million times on the top of the head. Looks like Katherine isn't the only one who is smitten! Thank goodness we crossed that hurdle! LOL.
When Matt got home that night, he could wait to tell his daddy that he "held baby 'BAKENNA' and kiss and kiss and kiss and kiss her"! Oh happy day!
2. Katherine is turning into quite the little gymnastics diva. Literally. Today in class they were working on the parallel bars. They were holding onto the bar in an under grasp position and trying to pull their legs over the top of the bar so that their entire body was resting on top of it. Danyel -- I'm sure there's a name for this move, but I can't remember... Anyway, Mr. Terry is kneeling on the ground next to the bar so that he can help the girls maneuver their legs over the top. However, when it was Katherine's turn, he just let her go, and man did she struggle. She tried over and over again, each time she'd almost getting her body over the bar, but for some reason she kept wanting to move her hands and then would lose her grip. She struggled and tried with more determination that I've ever seen out of this child, and let me assure you that's saying something! Anyway, after class, Mr. Terry comes out to talk to me. Evidently, she's the only girl in the class that can almost pull herself over, and she's soooo close. We just need to work on her hands some more, and she'll be there. She has the strength to do it, but just doesn't get the hand grasp thing yet. Needless to say, he was REALLY impressed!
You know what Katherine was the most proud of??? The fact that she did a backward roll on her own!
3. I've finally settled on the location for Katherine's birthday party. We're going to have it the weekend of March 15th (Saturday) from 1-3 at Backyard Adventures. They recommend a party with 20 kids or so, but it's only because they have 20 chairs in the party room. If 35 or 40 show up, it's fine with them. The fee to reserve the place remains the same, unlike The Playground For Kids, which charges an extra $10/kid over 20. Oh, and I can bring in any pizza I want, but if I get it from Dominos it's only $8/large. I'm not sure I've ever had Dominos, but $8 is a deal, compared to the $17/large Playground was going to charge. And it's WAY closer to our house, the preschool, and all of our other friends we'd invite. So, I think it's perfect!
4. Oh what else?!?!?!? Caleb has had rough week health wise... Friday night we went out for ice cream at Cold Stone with the Launderville's and then over to their house to play for a while... I'm not sure what brought it on, but all of a sudden Caleb came up to me, put his head on my lap and puked all over their couch. Fun times!! It was a once and done, so I'm pretty sure he didn't have the flu, but I felt TERRIBLE!
Then, on Tuesday night he started coughing up a lung and wheezing, so I took him into Dr. Jon, and not only did he have a lung infection but strep throat to boot. Who knew? So we're on nebs, a decongestant and an antibiotic. YUCK!
5. Tomorrow Andrea is going to watch my kiddos for a while, so I can go to lunch with the work girls. I can't wait! I'm so excited to see them and catch up. We're either going to the Olive Garden or this yummy local Mexican place that I LOVE!! Either way, I can't wait! Good eats and great friends. What could be better???

And he's off...
I took Matt to the airport this morning so that he could rent a car -- one way.
He's off to Minneapolis to buy the car he's been pining for -- for well... about 6 weeks now. It's an Infinity G35x and he's convinced Caleb that he's coming home with a race car. GREAT!! So now my little man thinks that Lightening McQueen is going to show up in the drive way... Won't he be dissapointed! LOL.
